Textile, clothing and leather processing machinery manufacturers have struggled in recent years, as a weak home market has offset growing demand from recycling and specialist niches. At the same time, the industry's heavy reliance on exports has increased its exposure to global conditions. The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) reports that worldwide short-staple spindle shipments dropped by 40% to 5.92 million units in 2024, cutting orders for volume cotton-spinning equipment. However, French manufacturers were somewhat cushioned from this drop because their strength is long-fibre preparation for wool, flax and technical yarns, the one spinning line that grew – shipments swelled by 62% to 600,000 units, as per the ITMF, propping up order books. Demand for recycling machinery have further supported the industry. The EU's Waste Framework Directive (WFD), which required separate textile collection from January 2025, followed by a revised WFD that entered into force in October 2025 and introduced EU-wide mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes requiring producers to fund textile collection and recycling, have driven investment in sorting and tearing equipment. Over the five years through 2026, revenue is forecast to inch down at a compound annual rate of 0.3% to €1.7 billion, including a forecast dip of 0.3% in 2026.
