IBISWorld expects the number of foreign students to increase by 12.8% during 2024-25 to 1,143,400 students. High-quality education, a wide array of study options and Australia's welcoming multicultural environment continue to make the country a top destination for students worldwide. According to the Department of Education, international student enrolments grew by 15% year-on-year as of December 2024, reflecting renewed confidence among students and families in Australia's ability to provide safe, high-quality learning environments and post-study opportunities. This surge is especially notable in higher education, where Chinese student numbers remain stable and new enrolments from East Asian countries like Taiwan and South Korea have grown by at least 20% in early 2024-25, offsetting declines from other regions, as the Department of Home Affairs noted.

Australia's academic reputation remains strong, with six universities ranked in the top 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. This global standing attracts families seeking quality education for their children and motivates overseas school leavers to pursue reputable degrees in Australia. The financial appeal of studying in Australia has also played a role. While the Australian dollar has strengthened somewhat, it remains relatively competitive compared to other major study destinations, helping to keep tuition fees and living expenses manageable for many international students. The Australian reported that, despite recent announcements of tuition fee increases at leading universities, like the University of Melbourne and UNSW Sydney, raising fees by up to 7% in 2025, demand remains robust because of an Australian degree's overall value and prestige.

Current enrolment data highlights the diversity of Australia's international student population. Department of Home Affairs data shows that as of the end of the 2024 financial year, students from India, China, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam accounted for more than 50% of all international students in Australia. India led with 19% of the total, followed by China at 16%, Nepal at 9%, the Philippines at 6% and Vietnam at 4%. This strong demand from Asia and beyond, combined with Australia's vibrant multicultural society and broad study offerings, ensures the country remains a leading global education hub. Overall, IBISWorld forecasts the number of foreign students to climb at a compound annual rate of 10.8% over the five years through 2024-25.
