Surgical Apparel Manufacturing in the US industry analysis

Surgical apparel manufacturers have been able to achieve some growth over the past five years, but several factors have tempered their expansion. While the aging baby boomer population has translated to an increasing number of surgeries, gradual demographic shifts aren't making up for the huge challenge that is import competition. Overseas manufacturers are able to leverage cheaper labor to undercut domestic companies and currently make up nearly half of the US market for surgical apparel. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented spike in demand for surgical equipment, but most of this skyrocketing demand was captured by foreign competitors in China and Mexico. Still, strong government support for manufacturers and consumers helped sustain the industry. Overall, industry-wide revenue has grown at an estimated CAGR of 0.9% to $1.1 billion over the five years to 2023, including an estimated 1.1% increase in 2023 alone. The pressure of highly available imports has presented another challenge to the industry in the form of profit loss. Manufacturers have been pushed to keep their prices low to avoid losing business but have also contended with surging wage costs and price hikes for their main inputs. They also have been innovating in an attempt to make their products stand out, but this requires investment in research and development. In addition, hospitals buy large quantities of surgical apparel products, giving them strong power when negotiating prices in contracts. These challenges have forced surgical apparel manufacturers to absorb heightened input costs, leading profit to compress and acquisition activity to slow. The next five years will be much more lucrative for US surgical apparel manufacturers. Indicated by a declining Trade-Weighted Index (TWI), the US dollar is set to depreciate more so than other major currencies, making US products comparatively cheaper. This will have the twofold effect of boosting exports and alleviating domestic manufacturers from some import competition. The continual aging of the population will help demand remain strong, and industry revenue is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.6% to $1.2 billion over the five years to 2028.

Trends and Insights

  • Import penetration is challenging domestic manufacturers. Cheaper and effective surgical apparel from overseas is undercutting US products and currently accounts for nearly half the market. However, the declining TWI will help promote US surgical apparel over the next five years.
  • Disposable caps, gowns and drapes are the most popular. These products command higher price tags and are essential equipment for hospitals and other medical care providers.
  • The Southeast is the top region. The region has many hospitals and key ports, giving surgical apparel manufacturers access to key buyers.
  • Clients need high-quality apparel. Because hospitals and other buyers need to preserve the health of their employees, they buy surgical garments that can offer effective protection from pathogens and contaminants. They also prefer products that are breathable and comfortable to wear.
