Full fibre broadband availability reached 78% of UK premises by July 2025, according to Ofcom’s Connected Nations report, up from 14% in May 2020. The UK government's Project Gigabit programme has significantly accelerated full-fibre deployment, especially in rural areas, which continue to lag behind urban areas in full-fibre connectivity (59% in July 2025). Trends and Insights
Wireless and satellite intensify pressure on fixed ISPs
- The fixed telecom market is set to face mounting competition from both wireless and satellite provider in the coming years. Fixed connections have been the standard for home broadband services, however the rapid deployment of 5G wireless services could threaten that. According to Ofcom’s 2025 Connected Nations report, 65% of UK premises have a strong 5G connection as of July 2025. Wireless providers are now offering 5G connected home broadband services. Depending on signal strength and congestion, 5G home broadband is capable of speeds of over 200 Mbps, according to Uswitch, which is well over the current average household speed of 73.2 Mbps.

Trends and Insights
FTTC revenue is declining as customers migrate to faster full fibre alternatives
- Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) services use fibre optic cables to reach a street cabinet, with the final connection to the premises completed using traditional copper telephone wires. This was the preferred method for the initial fibre rollout as ISPs could connect whole neighbourhoods with a single installation.
