Agricultural & Forestry Machinery Manufacturing in the UK industry analysis

The Agricultural and Forestry Machinery Manufacturing industry produces equipment like tractors, harvesting machinery, agricultural trailers, lawnmowers and other gardening equipment. In 2025-26, revenue is expected to grow by an annual rate of 3.7%, to £3.3 billion. Despite low confidence in the export market due to ongoing US tariffs, agricultural machinery manufacturers have sustained stable revenue growth. This has been spurred by the continued popularisation of gardening as a hobby among UK households, with customers stimulating demand for high-tech lawn care and electric hand tools. Simultaneously, despite cutting spending on tractors and heavy machinery, farmers are opting for highly efficient and productive equipment to maximise their returns from their tightened budgets. Advanced equipment can often be sold at a premium price, boosting the profitability machinery purchases for manufacturers.

Trends and Insights

  • The UK agricultural machinery industry faces headwinds. Struggling with reduced farm incomes leading to less spending on machinery and falling exports due to tariff uncertainty, the UK's agricultural machinery sector's revenue growth has been squeezed.
  • Falling farmer income hinders demand for new tractors. Lower profitability from poor crop yields squeezes farmer budgets, cutting their capacity to invest in new tractors.
  • The East Midlands boasts the best UK transport links. Central to the farming industry's hotspots, the East Midlands' robust transport infrastructure offers cost-efficient logistics for manufacturers, with the UK's largest freight airport located there.
  • Prominent global manufacturers dominate the UK's machinery market. John Deere, CNH and AGCO control the farm and forestry machinery industry, underscoring the domestic market's dependence on these international titans.

Market size and recent performance (2015-2030)

Industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 2.3 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated £3.3bn in 2025.

Trends and Insights

US tariffs squeeze the UK agricultural machinery export market

  • In 2024-25, agricultural machinery export volumes plummeted by 26.5%, according to UK Trade Info, due to consistently high inflation and weak global demand. This restrained consumer spending while prices for UK goods increased, directly hitting the overall revenue of agricultural machinery manufacturers in 2024-25.

Trends and Insights

Downstream subsidy payment uncertainty may hinder domestic market prospects

  • UK farmers are very reliant on subsidy payments to sustain production levels and operate sustainably. The Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) was the main source of subsidy for UK farmers between 2015 and 2023 and offered payments based on land area. From 2024, the Rural Payments Agency replaced the BPS with delinked payments, effectively removing the link between payments and land area. These payments are being gradually reduced each year, with the overall goal of phasing them out completely by 2027. The reduction in these payments will drastically cut farmers’ income, squeezing their ability to afford new equipment. This is likely to severely hit revenue for agricultural and forestry machinery manufacturers in the coming years.
