Mixed Farming in Germany industry analysis

In recent years, structural change in agriculture has progressed in a more moderate form. The growth threshold is increasing every year and with it the amount of land available to farms. To avoid being squeezed out of the market, farms below the growth threshold can switch to more profitable niches, such as the production of organic products. In the third year of the war, the sector is still confronted with high prices for inputs. In addition to fertiliser prices, the high price of natural gas is weighing on the industry, as the crops have to be dried in order to be stored. Extreme weather events are also causing highly volatile crop yields. Drought, for example, can cause grain to wither, while fruit growers benefit from the heat. In 2020, the coronavirus crisis led to a significant slump in demand from bulk buyers such as catering businesses, which had a negative impact on industry sales. In 2022, industry players benefited from a sharp rise in producer prices for many agricultural products despite lower harvest volumes. However, grain prices have been falling since 2023 due to the high price pressure on global agricultural markets. Overall, industry sales fell by an average of 0.9% per year in the period from 2019 to 2024. Following the increase in turnover last year, IBISWorld expects turnover to fall by 2.6% year-on-year to €19.2 billion in 2024.Between 2024 and 2029, industry turnover is expected to increase by an average of 0.3% per year, reaching 19.6 billion euros in 2029. Domestic meat consumption is likely to decline in the long-term trend, but demand from abroad is growing and exports are gaining in importance. New sales markets such as biofuel plants are also likely to increase demand for industry products and thus have a positive impact on sales development. However, extreme weather events cannot be predicted and can have a huge impact on crop yields, which limits planning certainty. Another challenge in the coming years is likely to be the growing requirements with regard to animal welfare and environmental protection.

Trends and Insights

  • The entire agricultural sector, including this industry, is undergoing structural change. This means that although there are fewer and fewer farms, the individual farms are getting bigger and bigger.
  • The largest share of sales in mixed agriculture is accounted for by pig farming products. Crop farming products follow in second place. However, more and more industry players are abandoning pig farming.
  • The Süd region is home to the largest number of mixed farming operations. However, the farms located there are predominantly small. There are significantly fewer farms in the East region, but they are usually larger.
  • The sector mainly comprises small businesses that are active in several branches of agricultural production. Due to the lack of specialisation, they can hardly achieve any competitive advantages, but because they are involved in different activities, they are often not in direct competition with each other.
