Machinery & Equipment Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The mechanical engineering sector, which primarily manufactures machines, components and other capital goods for a wide range of manufacturing industries, has experienced ups and downs over the past five years. In 2020, machine sales in the sector declined sharply because many industrial customers cut back on their own production and investments in new machines due to the economic slump caused by the pandemic. As the global economy recovered in 2021, the order situation and sales in the mechanical engineering sector improved significantly again, although cost increases and supply bottlenecks for primary products subsequently dampened the upturn. The outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022 significantly exacerbated inflation for raw materials and energy products. At the same time, increasingly weaker global demand for machinery led to a drop in the high order backlogs that players had built up since the pandemic, putting pressure on capacity utilisation and earnings in the sector over time. Over the entire period from 2020 to 2025, turnover in the sector fell at an average rate of 0.1% per year.

The weak trend in incoming orders in 2023 and 2024 is likely to have a noticeable impact on turnover development in the current year, despite slight increases in orders in the spring. IBISWorld expects turnover in the mechanical engineering sector to fall by 3.2% to 353.4 billion euros in 2025. In addition to the reluctance to invest in many leading economic areas, the question of whether and to what extent the European Union can find a balance with the new US administration in the area of trade policy is currently causing great uncertainty.

In the next five years, turnover in the mechanical engineering sector is expected to grow slightly. Increasing their profitability in the highly competitive international market for machinery remains a challenge for companies. However, the ongoing decarbonisation of the energy industry and industrial production in many countries as part of the energy transition should open up new growth prospects for players in the sector. IBISWorld forecasts that the mechanical engineering sector will grow by an average of 0.6% per year over the next five years. By 2030, mechanical engineering companies are expected to generate a turnover of 364.5 billion euros.

Trends and Insights

  • The mechanical engineering sector is currently struggling with falling order intake. Due to the subdued economic development in Germany and abroad in 2023 and 2024, customers in the sector are holding back on orders, which is likely to have a negative impact on capacity utilisation in 2025.
  • The tariffs of up to 25% on European machinery and equipment threatened by the USA would massively impair the export opportunities of German manufacturers. The mechanical engineering sector is particularly affected because deliveries to the USA accounted for around 14% of the total export volume in 2024 and it is dependent on open access to the US market.
  • The south of Germany has the highest number of companies in the sector. The automotive industry and metal processing companies in the greater Stuttgart and Munich areas are important customers for market participants.
  • Domestic manufacturers are in intense competition with other internationally operating mechanical engineering companies. The latter can produce their machines and systems more cost-effectively abroad and then export them to Germany. Competition from Chinese manufacturers in particular has intensified.

Trends and Insights

The transition to a climate-neutral economy offers new opportunities for mechanical engineering

  • In the coming years, mechanical engineering companies are likely to play a central role in the process of decarbonising energy supply, mobility and industrial production. Mechanical engineering companies manufacture machines and systems for their customers in the construction and energy sectors or in industrial sectors such as the automotive industry, which they need in order to establish new, more climate-friendly and resource-efficient production processes and technologies. As early as 2020, a study presented by the VDMA industry association in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group highlighted the potential of green technologies as a source of growth for the sector. By 2050 - the year in which the European Union aims to achieve climate neutrality - the mechanical engineering sector could generate around €10 trillion in additional turnover worldwide with climate-friendly technologies.
