Cutlery Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The cutlery and cutlery manufacturing industry has been subject to slight fluctuations in turnover over the past five years. Since 2021, however, consumer spending on household and furnishing items has steadily declined, which has also led to a decrease in demand for cutlery. As a result of the appreciation of the euro, imported cutlery and cutlery became cheaper on the domestic market. This had a negative impact on demand for domestically produced cutlery, which was unable to keep up with the prices of foreign products. The industry's turnover has fallen by an average of 2.2% per year since 2020. In the current year, industry turnover is likely to fall by a further 0.3% year-on-year to €1.1 billion. Since 2020, the profit margins of industry players have fallen due to high raw material prices for steel, a primary input factor in the production of cutlery and flatware. However, a slight recovery has been observed since 2023, as steel prices have recently fallen again.

Trends and Insights

  • In order to maintain their competitiveness, more and more industry players are relocating individual production steps or even the entire manufacturing process abroad. Cost advantages can be achieved by relocating sites abroad.
  • Exports of cutlery and flatware could decline due to the 50% US tariffs in force since June 2025. The USA is the industry's second-largest sales market. A decline in exports to the USA would therefore have a significant negative impact on the order situation.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia has by far the highest number of companies in the sector. The Solingen location in particular has a long tradition of producing cutlery.
  • In the low-price segment, there is high import pressure from goods from Eastern Europe and Asia. Manufacturers based abroad can offer their products at more favourable prices due to lower production costs.
