Consumer Electronics Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

In the last five years, German manufacturers of consumer electronics devices have been under considerable pressure to adapt. A weak consumer climate, structural changes in the automotive industry and increasing international competitive pressure have had a profound impact on the sector. Demand for traditional products such as CD players and car radios fell, while networked and multifunctional systems gained in importance. At the same time, manufacturers had to integrate themselves more closely into the automotive industry's value chains and develop technologies for networked vehicle architectures. Cost pressure and international competition also led to production capacities being relocated abroad. The consumer electronics manufacturing industry recorded an average annual decline in sales of 4.1% in the period from 2021 to 2026.

In 2026, industry turnover is expected to fall by 2.1% to 2 billion euros. In the current year, the situation is being exacerbated by persistently weak consumer sentiment. Falling income expectations and a low propensity to buy are having a significant negative impact on demand for consumer electronics. Sales remain weak, particularly in the mid-price segment, while premium suppliers such as Loewe are providing new impetus through design, quality and innovation. Manufacturers are increasingly focussing on high-quality, digitally networked products in order to shape the transition to smart, sustainable and functionally integrated systems. Investments in research, artificial intelligence and collaborations with technology partners are the key to remaining competitive despite adverse conditions and tapping into long-term growth potential.

Trends and Insights

  • The decline in production in the automotive industry is reducing the sales potential for infotainment-related electronic components, but is forcing manufacturers to realign their technology. Companies are increasingly integrating themselves into software-based vehicle architectures and cooperating more closely with car manufacturers in order to tap into new growth areas.
  • The industry's top-selling product is audio equipment. This segment's share of industry sales has fallen in the last five years, which is mainly due to the decline in sales figures for sound amplification equipment.
  • The largest number of sector companies can be found in the South region. Many automotive manufacturers are based there and are important industry customers.
  • The competition within the industry is fierce. Manufacturers of consumer electronics devices compete primarily on price, but the quality and technological level of the products manufactured are also decisive purchasing criteria.

The right to repair creates high customisation costs for German manufacturers, but also new market opportunities

  • The EU-wide right to repair, set out in Directive (EU) 2024/1799, aims to extend the lifespan of consumer goods and promote the transition to a circular economy. Manufacturers will be obliged to design appliances in such a way that they are easier to repair and can be used for longer. They must also provide spare parts, repair manuals and diagnostic tools in a suitable form throughout the product life cycle.
