While large hubs are benefiting from the growth in intercontinental traffic and economies of scale and are therefore gaining in importance, many regional airports are having to cope with falling passenger numbers and scarce results. Smaller locations are trying to counteract this by concentrating on niches such as low-cost connections, business travellers, private jets or tourist charter flights. However, with low fees and fixed airline partnerships, they are often only able to cover their high fixed costs to a limited extent. At the same time, revenues from retail, gastronomy, parking and property rental have become a mainstay of business models, as they increasingly cross-subsidise regulated flight operations. The planned withdrawal of the air traffic tax on 1 July 2026 should provide significant financial relief for the industry, increase the attractiveness of German locations for short-haul traffic and thus enable both additional flight movements and more passengers in the terminals. Against this backdrop, operators are increasingly focusing their investments on international connections and more efficient processes on the ground and in security checks in order to better utilise the existing infrastructure and broaden their revenue base. For the current year, industry turnover is expected to reach 18.7 billion euros, an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous year. Since 2021, industry turnover has grown by an average of 14.4% per year.
