Forestry & Logging in Europe industry analysis

The revenue of the European forestry and logging industry is forecast to contract at a compound annual rate of 0.6% over the five years through 2025 to €176.7 billion, including a 2.5% fall in 2025. This is the result of COVID-19 disruptions dampening sales in 2020 and 2021, as well as devastating wildfires reducing logging resources across Europe in recent years. Wildfires are increasing in frequency and severity across Europe, with Spain, Italy and Ukraine experiencing record areas burned in 2021, 2022 and 2024, respectively. To mitigate the economic loss from hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest destroyed, investment in climate-resilient tree species is growing, as is forest management. Wildfires are devastatingly impacting the profitability of managed forests, making their management and prevention crucial.

Trends and Insights

Forest fires slash logging companies’ supplies across Europe

  • Wildfires, exacerbated by rising temperatures and climate change, have emerged as a major threat to European forestry and logging, resulting in the destruction of extensive tracts of commercial woodland. For example, in 2021, Italy’s southern regions, including Sicily and Sardinia, lost over 350,000 hectares of forest, while Spain experienced its second-largest burn event in 2022, losing nearly 300,000 hectares, according to the European Commission. Timber volumes shrank dramatically; however, rising wood prices (as a result of lower supplies) more than offset the effects of the fires. Still, restoration costs and insurance premiums have spiked as a result. This, along with growing demand for timber across Europe, is placing great pressure on forestry and logging companies to boost production while ensuring a sustainable source of forestry resources.

Forestry & Logging in Europe outlook (2025-2030)

Market size is projected to grow over the next five years.

Growing demand for timber will pressure logging companies

  • A growing global demand for timber is putting significant pressure on logging companies. As timber becomes a vital component in the pursuit of decarbonising construction, the increased reliance on sawn and engineered wood to replace high-impact materials like concrete and steel is pushing up prices but also pressuring the availability of forestry resources for these and other markets.
