Reverse Mortgage Providers in Australia Industry Data and Analysis

MR
Matt Reeves
Analyst Melbourne, Australia February 2026

Reverse Mortgage providers are capitalising on surging demand. Seniors have become more exposed to the intense cost-of-living pressures of late, looking for financial solutions like releasing equity from their asset-rich lifestyles. Australia's ageing population has also provided a growing base of cash-poor retirees who need to generate money to fund their needs. Bespoke institutions are capitalising on these trends, as the major banks continue to tread cautiously around reverse mortgage products following the Hayne Royal Commission. Major banks ceased new lending and exited the market over prudential or reputational concerns just prior to the pandemic. Industry revenue was stunted in the years up to 2021-22 because of falling interest rates and economic uncertainty for lenders throughout the pandemic. This trend has since reverted, with revenue slated to climb 12.4% annually over the five years through 2025-26 to $461.8 million. Climbing house prices and surging interest rates over the period. Revenue is expected to inch down 0.3% in 2025-26 due to falling interest rates. Even with a rise in the cash rate in February 2026, strong competition is set to constrain home loan rate rises.
